Digital twins for sustainable and resilient production systems - NaRePro
Duration: 01.01.2025 bis 31.12.2027
Sustainability and resilience are important optimization goals for modern production systems. This requires digital twins that enable a modern life cycle assessment of all objects in production systems (products, processes and resources), e.g. on the basis of AI. Existing digital twins were developed for specific use cases and problems and are not generally applicable. In order to enable their use in the digitalization of companies, neutral and cross-application information models, implementation strategies and usage processes for digital twins are needed that enable the optimization of production systems with regard to sustainability and resilience aspects. The NaRePro project aims to close this gap. The basic objectives of the project are (a) the harmonized design of the structure of digital twins for sets of complementary use cases, (b) the definition and prototypical implementation of a creation and usage process for these digital twins, © the application of (a) and (b) to the various use cases in order to be able to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, changeability and sustainability of production systems in particular on the basis of sustainability assessments, and (d) the standardization of the relevant elements of the developed solutions together with IDTA and AutomationML e.V..
The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the project period from 2025 to 2027.

AutomationML (4) - Development of a comprehensively usable exchange format
Duration: 01.01.2020 bis 31.12.2026
The AutomationML project was launched on January 1, 2006. As part of the design and implementation process of production systems, a wide variety of design tools are used in the various process phases, each serving specific purposes. This begins with the design of the products to be manufactured using CAD tools, continues with the design of the manufacturing process, e.g. using material flow simulation tools, and ends with the implementation of control code for PLCs or robot controllers using corresponding manufacturer-specific tools. However, the abundance of tools and the wealth of different interfaces they support leads to system breaks and information losses at the transitions between the individual phases of the design and implementation process, which have a significant impact on the runtime and costs of the design and implementation process. In order to minimize this problem, the AutomationML project has set itself the goal of developing a comprehensively usable exchange format for all data relevant to the design and implementation process and its international standardization. This exchange format should ensure the interoperability of various tools along the design and implementation process. The IAF's work in the AutomationML project focuses on the investigation and development of the parts of the exchange format that are necessary for the design of control systems.

Digital plant modeling with neutral data formats (DIAMOND) Subproject: Consistent, process-oriented data models in the engineering of production systems (KPDM)
Duration: 01.11.2022 bis 31.10.2025
When new products are introduced, existing production systems have to be expanded or modified. New manufacturing processes are derived from new products, which are implemented either manually or using plant technology. This system technology (resources) is therefore directly linked to changes to the product and process. The plant life cycle contains a large number of individual data-processing processes in various engineering disciplines, many of which are design processes. Each of these disciplines already works with digital models. The individual steps build on each other and each discipline consumes information from the previous process. Currently, this information is usually transferred manually, which takes a lot of time and leads to an increased number of errors. This also applies to the entire ecosystem, in which component manufacturers, for example, extract the relevant information from their own engineering and make it available to the entire value chain. However, the current speed of transformation in the automotive industry no longer allows for long project runtimes and negative quality influences. It is therefore necessary to make changes available to all those involved in the process in a timely manner and to enable a common "picture" via an efficient exchange of information. The main objective of the OvGU within the DIAMOND-KPDM project is the development and application demonstration of a procedure for the application-specific creation and use of a system of coordinated domain-specific and cross-domain data models, the so-called Common Data Model, which enables an efficient and effective design of production systems through an efficient and effective transformation, integration and selection of design data.

Behavioral analysis of flexible components for handle-in-the-box systems
Duration: 01.06.2023 bis 31.12.2023
The aim of the project is to research the behavior of flexible parts in robot-based grip-in-the-box (rGiK). RGiK applications for rigid components, especially metal parts, have been realized in research and are in the early stages of application in the automotive industry. They are based on the reliable detection of the position of the workpieces to be handled, which then enables precise gripping. The fixed shape of the component to be handled plays an important role here, enabling pattern matching for position detection.
Flexible components do not have these stability properties. Their position cannot be detected by simple pattern matching. The research project will evaluate how the detection and handling systems must be controlled in order to enable rGiK for flexible parts and where current hardware and software limitations exist that could motivate further research.

INTEGRATE - Open service platform for end-to-end engineering and 3D technologies
Duration: 01.02.2017 bis 31.01.2020
A fundamental claim of Industry 4.0 is the integration of future-oriented digital technologies in industrial applications with the aim of significantly improving the efficiency and quality of the corresponding applications. The focus here is on the use of technologies available today or in the near future in flexible value creation networks. In order to increase efficiency, it is necessary to network the various parties involved in the life cycle of production systems - from product and production system planners to plant operators - using data technology and to overlay the real products and production resources with a digital image. This enables scenarios such as making early statements about feasibility, manufacturing costs and production capacities for products or the autonomous adaptation of production resources.
The aim is to develop a platform that enables a network of design tools that are not synchronized via a common database system to communicate with each other via planning objects. A corresponding platform is to be developed on the basis of the AutomationML data exchange format, which enables cooperative, cross-company engineering. Services that support object-oriented data exchange are to be provided on this platform, both for the exchange of planning data and for the integration and evaluation of runtime data.

Improvement of systematic reuse in the engineering of automated plants and systems - Concept and documents for consulting projects according to VDI 3695
Duration: 01.02.2013 bis 31.03.2014
In industrial practice, different technological, economic, legal and social trends are currently coming together, which have led or are currently leading to a change in the way engineers who design and use production systems deal with them.
A technologically and economically motivated trend is the growing demand for flexibility and adaptability of production systems, which enables engineers to produce a wider range of products in variable output quantities. This trend has an impact on the economic significance of individual phases of the life cycle of production systems and their overall economic balance.
The improvement of design processes is an important trend motivated by this, which is particularly aimed at reducing the creation costs of production systems. In response to this, various research, development and standardization efforts have attempted to develop methods for efficiently designing the design process of production systems and evaluating the efficiency of the current status of these processes.
A particularly prominent result of these efforts is the VDI guideline series 3695 - Engineering of plants - Evaluation and optimization of engineering. This guideline defines possible target states for design organizations (companies, parts of companies or cooperating companies that carry out a joint design process) and describes criteria for achieving them. On the basis of this guideline and other analysis methods developed at the Institute of Ergonomics, Factory Automation and Factory Operation (IAF), such as the 4D analysis method, it is possible to identify the potential that individual companies have for organizing their work more effectively in the context of design processes and to generate recommendations for action on this basis.
The aim of this project, in cooperation with the Austrian logi.cals GmbH and the Christian Doppler Laboratory Software Engineering Integration for Flexible Automation Systems at the Vienna University of Technology, is to develop and create concepts and documents for corresponding consulting projects in accordance with VDI 3695 to improve systematic reuse in the engineering of automated plants and systems, particularly against the background of the development of control applications. The task of the consulting projects should be to identify concrete measures based on a status analysis of a company under consideration and the design processes carried out in it, which enable a more effective design of design processes.

The huge amount of applicable tools and the much higher amount of different supported export and import interfaces of these tools results in breakages and data loos among the different phases of the design and engineering process causing waist of time and money within the design and engineering process.
The aim of the AutomationML project is the design and international standardisation of a data exchange format covering all information relevant within the design and implementation process of manufacturing systems useable within all phases of the design and engineering process. This data format should increase the interoperability of the applied tools.
Focal point of the work of IAF is the consideration and development of the parts of the AutomationML exchange formal required for the design of control applications.

PABADIS PROMISEPABADIS based Product Oriented Manufacturing Systems for Re-Configurable Enterprises
Duration: 01.08.2005 bis 31.07.2008
Future manufacturing will require high flexibility/adaptability and speed with respect to organisation of production and supply-chain management and require an increasing amount of services and inter-company collaboration. These future requirements especially concern control and networking of embedded control systems of manufacturing enterprises at ERP (office), MES (factory control) and production level. Taking these requirements into account and building on top of the successful FP5 Project PABADIS, the PABADIS"PROMISE (P2) project extends the idea of distributed control to an innovative architecture which incorporates both resource and product. With the project"s new paradigm "The Order is the Application" which stipulates a correspondingly innovative control and networking architecture across all three levels, P2 will combine European and international forces. As designated outcome the P2 project will develop a new control architecture based on distributed intelligence, a new manufacturing ontology, a first embedded Real-Time agent platform for control, a new generation of RFID"s, a new generation of field control devices, and building blocks for a new generation of Enterprise Resource Planning systems. At ERP level new functions together with new interfaces will be developed, enabling direct access from ERP level to the field control system following the new P2 ontology, which provides a framework for product and production process description and comparison. Both Manufacturing Execution System (MES) level and Field Control level will be completely decentralised. Innovative to current practice and research, the MES level will be decentralised into Mobile Software Agents which are located (stored) in smart Tags which are attached directly to the product (Agent on RFID). Once the product arrives at a processing station, the Agent is read out of the RFID Tag and invoked to ensure product processing, further planning based on the ontology based descriptions, and further necessary transport steps. For this, a first Embedded Real-Time Agent Platform will be developed. To be flexible with regard to the logical usage of the plant s machinery, the product dependent control part (for which a new manufacturing ontology will be developed) has to be provided individually for each product in the moment of production and is also located within the Mobile Software Agent, respectively in the RFID Tag. The Field Control level, correspondingly, is reduced to Residential Software Agents, which represent the physically possible production process. Only these fine grained control building blocks are permanently located on the resource control devices. They will behave as drivers for the physics of the resources similar to drivers for PC periphery systems like printers and modems. Hence, the PABADIS"PROMISE project will provide basic architectures, methodologies and technologies for the long term innovation of manufacturing systems.
AgentAut - Agent based interaction architecture for distributed control systems
Duration: 01.07.2005 bis 30.06.2007
The increase of flexibility, the enlargement of maintenance capabilities, and the reduction of design efforts are main trends within industrial manufacturing applications during the last 20 years. Thereby, control systems have played an important role. Several research and development activities have been made to provide means for the design of flexible, easy implementable, and easy maintainable control systems. They have resulted in two main architectures, order control systems and process control systems. Both architectures will use design pattern for distributed control systems, but these design pattern are related to the individual architectures and thereby different and not applicable in the other architecture. Order control systems are mainly agent based and will navigate manufacturing orders at runtime through a system of manufacturing resources. Process control systems are mainly function block oriented and consider distribution and coordination aspects of control decisions to control devices. Hence, order control systems are related to the higher levels of the automation pyramid and process control systems to lower levels of the automation pyramid. These trends have resulted in breakages of the used technologies and structures during the design and implementation especially between the different levels of the automation pyramid. Function blocks and agent systems, the mainly used technologies of both control architecture groups, seam to be not combinable by technical, technological, and architectural reasons. The overcoming of this problem is one of the most important challenges of the current research in the control field today. The aim of the AgentAut project is the development of an integrated methodology for distributed control systems under involvement of order and process control systems. Therefore, AgentAut will combine the main architectural building blocks of both control architecture types of distributed control systems, i.e. agents and function blocks, to a consistent control architecture with a dedicated control system design methodology.
JAKOBI - java-based and components-based industrial control
Duration: 01.05.2004 bis 30.07.2006
The JAKOBI project aims at the development of new control devices based on the programming language Java, which enables a platform independent application development, plug-and-play mechanisms, web based management functionalities and supports the usage in distributed control systems. For that purpose a consistent package of hardware, Java Virtual Machine, runtime environment and application building blocks will be developed. Important parts oft that development are the design and specification of a framework of basis building blocks for the application development, mechanisms for a flexible, easy and user-friendly device management as well as the presentation of a migration path between the present technology in industrial control and the new object-oriented control. JAKOBI will make a far-reaching contribution for the flexibility of control systems and simplification of design, re-design and implementation of control systems.

SIF
Duration: 01.10.2000 bis 31.05.2003
The adaptable transport system: Development of modular components for material flux systems delivering seperately packed articles The main focus of this research project is the development of modular components for material flux systems delivering seperately packed articles in view of material flux, information flux and power transmission aimed at attaining the adaptability in transport systems. For achieving the adaptability in production systems, which is almost already attained as regards to the organizational area, an entirely modular-constructed material flux system shall be designed and transposed as a prototype. Such modular-constructed components will render it possible - both regarding the physical material transport using profiles "from the construction kit" and regarding the information flux using distributed systems in the field range as well as through engines with integrated power kit and through a software-, particularly objective finding strategy suited to this strictly modular-constructed concept - to carry out systems that manage to work entirely without switchbox and convert the demand for adaptability on a technical level, too.
