New publication: „Lecture Notes in Manufacturing Systems Design and Manufacturing Process Organisation“
April 2017 There are enormous changes in the production sciences at the present time. Driven by developments in information and communication technology, completely new production structures based on decentralization and autonomy are emerging. The keyword is distributed production. It means not just the distribution of production sites on the globe, but also the distribution of intelligence, decentralization of the controls and the distribution of decision-making levels.

These developments do not come out of nowhere. The knowledge and theories that have grown in many different fields of application are currently so far advanced, that they can all be digitized and transferred into highly integrated production models based on network logic. Tracing, tracking, RFID, cyber manufacturing, cloud computing and big data are only a few keywords.
These fundamental changes were the reason for the chair of factory operation and production systems to look through all the lectures and to focus more sharply on these digitization tendencies. The relevant lecture contents of the Factory Operation, the Operating Organization, the Factory Planning as well as the Optimization of Production Processes were compiled in a volume in such a way that everything integrates seamlessly into the digitalization chapter of the distributed production. Significant structuring criteria are the resolution levels of the production systems, which according to DIN are equally present in the process as well as in the factory planning and in the automation technology. They are the guardrails for compatible resolutions of all object areas into corresponding and harmonized detail levels.
Important impetus for the special preparation of the lecture contents resulted from our research co-operation with renowned European universities and partners worldwide. The publication in English also underlines the international importance of production system research at the Otto-von-Guericke University in Magdeburg.
The participants, consisting of the chair assistants as well as some English-speaking doctors and doctoral students, are herewith thanked for their enormous commitment.
